Ireland has one of the highest teen suicide rates in Europe, and yet teenagers are so often dismissed. Instead of taking them seriously, adults chalk their issues down to hormones or something they’ll grow out of. Soar is an independent youth outreach movement, focusing exclusively on teenagers. Soar believe there is greatness in every teenager and give them a safe space to talk out anything that might hold them back from reaching their extraordinary potential.
Imagine struggling with an issue and being told it’s just a phase? It happens to teenagers all the time. So, to show teens that Soar takes their feelings seriously, we used this dismissive phrase to create a film for teenagers by teenagers. By reclaiming the meaning behind the words, we were able to shine a light on the potential of this phase and celebrate the possibilities that come with it.
Genuine teenagers became the driving force behind the piece, and by talking to and casting young people from various socio demographic backgrounds, we were able to speak to teens on their level, with a truly authentic voice.
All workshops are now fully booked for 2018 and Soar is set to enter the Irish school curriculum. For a small organisation this film helped raise €150,000 in funding within a week of launch.
